Since Qigong(气功) brings us a lot of benefits(好处). We have done some reviews of qigong books and found out that the following three Qigong books are the best choices for you to learn and practice qigong.
The Way of Qigong: The Art and Science of Chinese Energy Healing
The Best Classic Qigong Book
This is an authoritative book on Qi Gong written by one of the world's foremost teachers and practitioners of Qi Gong. The author's, Ken's knowledge, wit and humor make this book very easy to read and interesting. It is a "must read" for anyone who are interested in learning and practicing Qi Gong. In addition, this book is considered as good as many original Qigong books in Chinese.
The book, The Way of Qigong covers the entire range of theory and practice, including relaxation, meditation, massage, therapeutic touch, and postures. Qi (chi) means "life energy," and the goal of qigong, master and Chinese scholar Ken Cohen tells us, is "to train the mind to send qi where it is needed." In this encyclopedic work, Ken teaches us not only how to do qigong, but what it means and how it benefits us. ken is at his best when reducing arcane Chinese theories to plain English, and as a result, The Way of Qigong is as interesting as it is useful.
As much a "why-to" as a how-to, this is the most comprehensive book on the Chinese healing art, qigong. Related to tai chi, qigong is a series of movements designed to bring qi, or life-force, into the body and encourage it to flow without blockage. Ken meticulously defines the philosophy that inspired this ancient practice, but his engaged and engaging tone keeps the mass of material he presents from becoming ponderous. He well covers the experimental scientific evidence of qigong's beneficial effect, and the lengthy, illustrated section of exercises he includes shows how qigong can be used for emotional and spiritual as well as physical healing.
It is a Great Introduction Book for Beginners
Author, Ken steps the beginner through theory and then the various qigong exercises. He explains the importance and meaning of Qi and then discusses its many aspects, the stance, relaxation and breathing. Ken goes on to explain that qigong meditation includes two types of practices: entering tranquility and healing visualization. He compares these to other meditation practices and how the practice nourishes and heals the body and mind.
There are helpful illustrations of movements, a chapter on self-healing massage and a suggested year-long practice schedule, among many other details of this classic and healthful practice. The book also includes color and organ meditation, healing sounds, Big Dipper, External practices, diet, etc.
- Covers wide topics.
- Well footnoted and indexed.
- Has suggested routines for a student to practice.
- Gives advices on the dangers of wrong Qi practice. Which is quite important but neglected in some other books.
- A great job of making potentially complex and mystifying practices intelligible to the average western reader.
- A terrific mix of basic theory with specific qigong (chi kung) exercises and routines.
- No illustrations for meridians or acupuncture points.
- The moving meditations are done by drawings. Photos would have been much better.
Overall it is a great introduction book to Qigong. If you want to learn about meridians and acupuncture points and/or do other intermediate qigong methods, you need to refer to other books.
The Way of QiGong is an extremely well-written and comprehensive history of qigong. The author, Ken, a China scholar and practitioner extraordinaire, characterizes qigong as "a holistic system to self-healing exercise and meditation, an ancient, evolving practice that includes healing postures, movement, self-massage, breathing techniques and meditation."
The Way of Qigong is as interesting as it is comprehensive, as fascinating as it is practical, and as complex as it is perfectly simple. Highly recommended!
