Are you interested in learning Chinese and want to find a "learn Chinese program" that fits your needs?

I believe Chinese lessons with Kids Chinese Podcast is the best "learn Chinese program".

1. How the idea for creating a practical and fun learn Chinese Program came about?

My name is Aihua Cao. I was born in China and received my undergraduate education in China, PhD degree in Japan, post-doctorial education in United States. I had taught at a university in China and Japan respectively as a professor. Now I am living and working in California, United States.

Amy is my daughter. She was born in California, United States. When Amy was five in 2010, I decided to teach her Chinese in a systematic way because Mandarin Chinese is one of the most spoken languages in the world.

Since I planned to teach Amy Chinese, I thought it would be nicer to help more kids, teenagers and adults who are interested in learning Chinese. A podcast is extremely helpful for language learning since listeners are in control of when and how they listen no matter where they are.

Kids Chinese Podcast was born in October, 2010 with the hope to help kids, teenagers and adults around the world learn Chinese in a practical and systematic way.

Chinese lessons with Kids Chinese Podcast help children learn Chinese while discussing the topics they are interested in. We develop the Chinese study course for kids learning Chinese based on children’s learning style and pace. We teach kids practical Chinese (e.g., practical Chinese speaking) that can be most useful for every day life. Moreover, we offer a variety of interesting topics that make learning Chinese for kids effective and fun!

The earlier the better. The earlier young kids start learning Chinese, the easier it will be for them to master the language. Language Research Study reports that kids under five can speak a language without any accent just like a native speaker.

Kids Chinese Podcast believe that learning language at a young age is as much a basic skill as walking or eating or talking. It’s the best gift parents can give your child for life.

2. The approach we take and why it works?

For Level-1 Kids Chinese Podcast lessons, we use the teaching method of learning a foreign language as a kid.

When we acquire our mother tongue as children, we understand and speak before we are capable of reading and writing. This is also true when learning a foreign language. In the Level-1 Chinese lessons, our goal is to let students have a feeling on Mandarin Chinese phonics, pronunciation and Chinese Characters to build a sense of Chinese language in a very short period of time. The podcast transcript serves a very good study guide. Musical tones are the most difficult part in Mandarin Chinese, that’s why we use the native-language-acquiring approach, namely, first learn listening and then imitating as a child at Level-1 Chinese lessons for Chinese beginners.

For Level-2 and up, we use the teaching methods that also take advantage of logical thinking, which is one of the strengths adults have. In the meantime, we use simple and easy ways to explain the new Chinese characters, words and phrases, so even a child can underhand.

Same as level-1 lessons, we still help students learn Chinese by focusing on daily conversations. However, we give a lot more detail explanation using logical thinking on introducing Chinese characters, words and phrases. In addition, we introduce simple grammar patterns, although we do not teach students grammar formally at this level.

Kids Chinese Podcast helps students learn Chinese listening and speaking via podcast, and Chinese reading and writing via podcast transcript, exercise worksheet and online exercises. Lessons’ topics are designed using practical dialogs starting with focusing on kids’ daily life in the United States while students receive systematic training on Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing.

"Dear Aihua and Amy,

Thank you so much for your effort in the lessons. Cindy-my 4-year-old daughter and I really enjoy it.
Thank you so much,
Cindy & Ann"

"Fantastic Website! I'm a non-native-speaker Chinese teacher and I have to say I love your site. It's easy on the eyes and the lessons are superb! I will definitely be recommending the site to people I know who are interested in learning or improving their Chinese.
— Nneka"

"Aihua and Amy: Thank you so much for this thoughtfully laid out system of learning Chinese. I feel privileged to learn such an ancient language. Your lessons make it possible for me to talk with my godchildren that are taking Chinese at school. Aihua, your English is easy to understand. You have a talent for teaching.
— Ray"

"Though I am a Chinese and my parents can speak and read mandarin, I attended an English medium school. For may years I have been trying to master mandarin, even buying books and tapes on Mandarin . Though I manage to learn some words here and there, the progress was negligible. I have tried other Chinese Pod casts but I find yours to be the best as it starts with the very basic and is systematic and I find it most beneficial. At the moment I am concentrating on learning to speak with the correct pronunciation and will later learn how to write the words. I hope that eventually I will be able to read simple Chinese papers. Your new format on character writing is most useful when it comes to learning to write the characters. Thank you for your effort in imparting the learning of Mandarin for people like me who has no time to go for formal Chinese classes.
— Heng Ong Chia"

"I am 63 years old and I am a complete novice. Learning as the children do is a brilliant concept. I appreciate all your dedication to this approach. Excellent website. Wish you every success with it. “can’t teach an old dog new tricks” or “never too old to learn” I think the latter.
