In Level 1 Chinese Lesson 2, Family Introduction, we have learned how to introduce your family members including your mom and dad in Chinese.

In this lesson, we are going to learn more Chinese expressions on family introduction. You are going to learn how to introduce your grandparents, your brothers and sisters in Chinese.

We already learned that "爸爸 (bà ba)" means "dad" and "妈妈 (mā ma)" means "mom" in Lesson 2. Grandpa is "爷爷 (yé ye)" and grandma is "奶奶 (nǎi nai)" in Chinese. " (hé)" means "and". It is a conjunction, namely, the word is used to connect the two words, "爸爸 (bà ba)" and "妈妈 (mā ma)". A conjunction is a word that connects other words or groups of words.

Let’s translate this dialog into English.

AihuaHi!
This is my dad and my mom.
AmyHi!

"兄弟 (xiōng dì)" means brother. Specifically, " (xiōng)" means "older brother" and " (dì)" means younger brother. "哥哥 (gē ge)" also means older brother, it is often used in speaking Chinese. On the other hand, " (xiōng)" is more formal than "哥哥 (gē ge)", it is used in written Chinese at most of the cases.

"姐姐 (jiě joe)" means older sister and "妹妹 (mèi men)" means younger sister. So, it makes sense that sister is "姐妹 (jiě mèi)" in Chinese.

Let's look at the verbs, the action words, in the dialog. " (yǒu)" means "have". Just like we use "have" a lot in English. " (yǒu)" is used in many cases in Chinese as well.

" (yī)" means one; " (gè)" is a word showing quantity. It tells us how many sisters Anna has. "一个妹妹 (yī gè mèi mei)" means "one younger sister".

" (huò)" means "or". It is another conjunction showing possibilities here. "还是 (hái shì)" is another word that means "Or" in Chinese.

We learned " (ne)" in Lesson 53, Chinese greetings. It is a question particle that is used in elliptical questions. Elliptical construction is a sequence of words in which some words have been omitted. Because of the logic or pattern of the entire sentence, it is easy to know by hint what the missing words are.

Let’s translate this dialog into English.

AnnaHi, Grace!

Again, " (gè)" is a word showing quantity. It tells us how many sisters or brothers Sara or Jen has.

"两个弟弟 (liǎng gè dì di)" means two younger brothers. "三个哥哥 (sān gè gē ge)" means three older brothers.
