Lecture

In Lesson 102 Numbers Up To 1000, we know that tens, hundreds, and thousands are " (shí)", " (bǎi)", and (qiān) in Chinese, respectively.

We can make three-digit numbers by hundreds, tens and ones.

For example, 723, the ones' place is 3, " (sān)" in Chinese. The tens' place is 2, "二十 (èr shí)". The hundreds' place is 7, "七百 (qī bǎi)". So 723 is "七百二十三 (qī bǎi èr shí sān)".

In this lesson, we learn how to say "ten thousand" in Chinese. It is " (wàn)". "10000" is 一万 (yī wàn).

We can make four-digit numbers by thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.

For example, 1218, the ones' place is 8, " (bā)" in Chinese. The tens' place is 1, "一十 (yī shí)" in Chinese. The hundreds' place is 2, "二百 (èr bǎi)". The thousands' place is 1, "一千 (yī qiān)". So 1218 is "一千二百一十八 (yī qiān èr bǎi yī shí bā)".

Another example, 5347, the ones' place is 7, " (qī)" in Chinese. The tens' place is 4, "四十 (sì shí)". The hundreds' place is 3, "三百 (sān bǎi)". The thousands' place is 5, "五千 (wǔ qiān)". So 5347 is "五千三百四十七 (wǔ qiān sān bǎi sì shí qī)".

One more example, 6599, the ones' place is 9, " (jiǔ)" in Chinese. The tens' place is 9, "九十 (jiǔ shí)". The hundreds' place is 5, "五百 (wǔ bǎi)". The thousands' place is 6, "六千 (liù qiān)". So 6599 is "六千五百九十九 (liù qiān wǔ bǎi jiǔ shí jiǔ)".

In the lesson transcript, you can see a table representing a brief description of the Chinese Number System.
