Lecture

In Lesson 101 Numbers Up To 100, we know that the Chinese counting system is fairly easy and straightforward. There are not as many number words as in English. There are Chinese characters representing the numbers zero through nine, and other characters representing larger numbers such as tens, hundreds, thousands and so on.

We know that "hundred" is " (bǎi)" in Chinese.

We can make two-digit numbers using first the digit itself, from 1 to 9, then the place, 10.

For example, 76, the ones' place is 6, " (liù)" in Chinese. The tens' place is 7, "七十 (qī shí)" in Chinese. So 76 is "七十六 (qī shí liù)".

In this lesson, we learn how to say "thousand" in Chinese. It is " (qiān)". "1000" is 一千 (yī qiān).

We can make three-digit numbers by hundreds, tens and ones.

For example, 121, the ones' place is 1, " (yī)" in Chinese. The tens' place is 2, "二十 (èr shí)" in Chinese. The hundreds' place is 1, "一百 (yī bǎi)" in Chinese. So 121 is "一百二十一 (yī bǎi èr shí yī)".

Another example, 348, the ones' place is 8, " (bā)" in Chinese. The tens' place is 4, "四十 (sì shí)" in Chinese. The hundreds' place is 3, "三百 (sān bǎi)" in Chinese. So 348 is "三百四十八 (sān bǎi sì shí bā)".

One more example, 599, the ones' place is 9, " (jiǔ)" in Chinese. The tens' place is 9, "九十 (jiǔ shí)" in Chinese. The hundreds' place is 5, "五百 (wǔ bǎi)" in Chinese. So 599 is "五百九十九 (wǔ bǎi jiǔ shí jiǔ)".

In the lesson transcript, you can see a table representing a brief description of the Chinese Number System.

" (sān)" means "three" and " (bǎi)" means "hundred". So "三百 (sān bǎi)" means "three hundred". How to say 600 in Chinese? 六百 (liù bǎi)

" (jiǔ)" means "nine". " (bǎi)" means "hundred". " (shí)" means "ten". So "九百 (jiǔ bǎi)" means nine hundred, and "九十 (jiǔ shí)" means ninety.

"九百九十 (jiǔ bǎi jiǔ shí)" is "nine hundred ninety".
