More and more people worldwide are becoming interested in Chinese Language Education.
One fifth of the planet speaks Mandarin Chinese, making it the most spoken language on the planet. Chinese is ranked as the second most important business language in the world by Bloomberg Media. China is the second largest economy in the world.
There is a trend in all parts of America to offer instruction in Chinese. Experts said several factors were fueling the surge in Chinese. Parents, students and educators recognize China’s emergence as an important country and believe that fluency in its language can open opportunities, especially for global business and diplomacy.
Chinese Language Education in Public and Private Schools
Based on the government’s survey, there are about 1,600 American public and private schools that are teaching Chinese, up from 300 or so a decade ago. And the numbers are growing exponentially. The increasing interest in learning Chinese now is not in the heritage communities, but in places that don’t have significant Chinese populations. A decade ago, most of the schools with Chinese programs were on the East and West Coasts. But in recent years, many schools have started Chinese programs in heartland states, including Ohio and Illinois in the Midwest, Texas and Georgia in the South, and Colorado and Utah in the Rocky Mountain West.
It is believed there is still a strong need for expertise in Chinese language instruction and cross-cultural communications for many of these programs. Contrary to popular belief, there are NOT hordes of qualified Chinese teachers, administrators of Chinese language programs, and curriculum developers for such roaming the school districts of the United States.
With the efforts increasing over time, we will be watching with interest as Chinese language instruction becomes more expert, professional, and effective in the United States.
