History of Kids Chinese Podcast

Kids Chinese Podcast was born in October, 2010 with the goal to help more people around the world learn Chinese in a practical and systematic way. By now, Kids Chinese Podcast has members and listeners from 166 countries and territories around the world. We have received a lot of comments, suggestions and praises.

How the Idea for the Podcast Came About?

Actually, Amy is my daughter. When Amy was 5 years old in 2010, I decided to teach her Chinese in a systematic way because Mandarin Chinese is one of the most spoken languages in the world.

Since I planned to teach Amy Chinese, I thought it would be nicer to help more people who are interested in learning Chinese. A podcast is extremely helpful for language learning since listeners are in control of when and how they listen no matter where they are.

In October, 2015, five year old Elly, Amy's sister, joined Kids Chinese Podcast. We started adding video Chinese lessons.

The Approach Kids Chinese Podcast Takes and Why it Works, Particularly the Role of Amy and Elly.

We use the native-language-acquiring approach. You learn Chinese with Amy and Elly while they are growing.

For Level-1 Kids Chinese Podcast lessons for Chinese newbies, we use the teaching method of learning a foreign language as a kid.

When we acquire our mother tongue as children, we understand and speak before we are capable of reading and writing. This is also true when learning a foreign language. In the Level-1 Chinese lessons, our goal is to let students have a feeling on Mandarin Chinese phonics, pronunciation and Chinese Characters to build a sense of Chinese language in a very short period of time. The podcast transcript serves a very good study guide. Musical tones are the most difficult part in Mandarin Chinese, that’s why we use the native-language-acquiring approach, namely, first learn listening and then imitating as a child at Level-1 Chinese lessons for Chinese newbies.

For Level-2 and Level-3 Kids Chinese Podcast lessons for Chinese beginners, we use the teaching methods that also take advantage of logical thinking, which is one of the strengths adults have. In the meantime, we use simple and easy ways to explain the new Chinese characters, words and phrases, so even a child can understand.

Same as level-1 lessons, we still help students learn Chinese by focusing on daily conversations. However, we give more detail explanation using logical thinking on introducing Chinese characters, words and phrases. In addition, we introduce simple grammar patterns, although we do not teach students grammar formally at these levels.

Every culture has its own good and bad. Chinese culture has thousands years of history, we want our kids inherit the good ones. In addition, China is becoming one of the top countries in the world, knowing Chinese language is definitely a plus for the kids. Your grandchildren are lucky that they have a grandma who loves them and wants to help them on their education.

You may start from daily conversation in Chinese. The three lessons at each level at are free. They may serve a reference for you. Hope your grandchildren like learning Chinese and you enjoy teaching them!

Just discovered KCP and I am truly excited about the possibilities. My 4yr old daughter and I visited California some weeks ago and she was really intrigued about some kids speaking in mandarin. I explained to her that we could start learning mandarin so she could make new friends. I found a different site where we started with ni hau (sorry not sure yet how to input pinyin here) and she is delighted repeating it. Now that I found this site I am sure we will build solid steps, I like the structure and care that you put in building the sites and the fact that is really easy to start learning. I am sure my daughter will love hearing the audios and the videos. She already speaks both Spanish (native language) and English (we live in USA), and I am really hopeful she will master mandarin in the future. Thanks a lot for your efforts in building this site.
P.D. any recommendations about programs and radio stations we could listen in order to be immersed fully in the language? (maybe some cartoons?)
    Thanks in advance
